Where Lutherans For Life of SD Stands on Initiated Measure 11

Some have asked: “Given Lutherans For Life’s consistent stance against abortion even in the case of rape and incest, how can Lutherans For Life of SD, Inc. endorse Initiated Measure 11, with its allowing of exceptions in the cases of rape and incest?”

Lutherans For Life continues to teach that every human life is a divine creation and precious gift, from its first moment of conception, to be valued and protected, and mourned whenever it is lost.  This includes the lives of those who are conceived as a result of rape and incest.  While Initiated Measure 11 does grant these exceptions, it clearly speaks to the sanctity of all human life, including life in its earliest stages.  In no way does it suggest that the exceptions do not end a human life or that any human life has greater or lesser value based on the circumstances of his or her beginning.

In the right hand kingdom of grace, that is, in the church, in matters of theology, in the teaching of God’s Word, we must never make compromises.  God has given us His Word and it is to be kept clear, true, and pure.  It is to be our sole norm and guide.  But Initiated Measure 11 is a product of the left hand kingdom of power, the state, where the laws are made by man and guided by reason.  In the kingdom of the left, people live with the lesser of two evils for the purpose of order, and compromise is a tool for effective governance. The goal is to make society decent and good and just for all people.

As Lutherans For Life who are also citizens of the state of South Dakota, we live in both kingdoms.  While we Christians certainly want all of our decisions to be informed by God’s Word, we cannot insist nor should we expect that everyone in the left hand kingdom will do the same.  We live according to human reason in this world.  Reason can grasp the good things that we do in society.  It is to that reason to which we must appeal to the citizens of our state.

To be sure, Lutherans For Life of South Dakota would choose an initiative that bans all abortions over this current initiative with exceptions, but that is not the choice that we have before us.  While Initiated Measure 11 is not a perfect law, it is a good law.  It would apply to over 90% of the abortions that are now performed in South Dakota today, and it is our prayer and hope that its enactment would go a long way toward educating all citizens on the sanctity of every human life.

I urge you to check out Initiated Measure 11 for yourself.  A full copy of this proposed law may be found at http://www.voteyesforlife.com/docs/Petition.pdf.   If you also find that you agree with this initiative, I would ask you to join in the campaign, and encourage other members of your congregation to do the same.

Your Support is Crucial!!
We need your help in taking a stand for God's precious gift of life by displaying the Witness of the Crosses Display in your area.  During this election year every person in this state needs to see this display consisting of approximately 800 crosses that serve as a memorial to the thousands of babies whose lives have been taken as the result of abortion in South Dakota.  It also serves as a reminder to the men, women, and families who have suffered or are suffering after making an abortion decision that Jesus died to forgive them.

Is Abortion Allowed in Cases of Rape or Incest?
(A Brief Study of 2 Kings 14:6)  by Dr. Jean Garton

The Child of Rape-- Place two newborn babies side by side on a table.  Call together medical specialists, scientific professionals, social engineers, and leading theologians.  Have technicians measure the size of the babies, examine their bodies, observe their behavior, draw blood, and perform reaction tests of all sorts.  Then let the experts tell us which baby is the product of rape.  They can't!

The child of rape, as every child, is a work of art created by God.  Isaiah 64:8 speaks of God as the potter who fashions clay into something beautiful.  In Psalm 139 the comparison is even more exact that it is God himself who weaves our bodies together in our mother's womb.

The Godless Act of Rape--Rape, long considered a sexual act, is now recognized as an act of violence, control, and rage.  Those emotions are all exhibited in the rape of Tamar by her half-brother, Amnon, and the ravished Tamar rightly calls the rape a “godless act”  (2 Samuel 13:12).

The outrage of society today against such a “godless act” is to demand vengeance.  Someone ought to pay!  Ironically, it is often the innocent child who, through abortion, receives a sentence of death.  Abortion may serve the emotional needs of a society repelled by rape, but it doesn't serve the needs of the two human beings most effected—the mother and her unborn child.

Abortion vs. Love—Abortion, as a supposed “solution,” is usually offered out of pity for the violated victim.  Pity, of course, is a good thing in that it is the feeling through which a person shares in the suffering and wounded condition of another.  Yet, love is greater than pity!  Pity sees the raped woman in her desolation and shame but also sees the woman in relation to the God who redeemed her through the sacrifice of his Son, Jesus.  Love sees the value God places on unborn life and knows that He has a plan for both the mother and child.

In 2 Kings 14:6 we are reminded of the Lord's command,  “Parents must never be put to death for the crimes of their children, and children must never be put to death for the crimes of their parents.”  To impose capital punishment, in the form of abortion, on the innocent child is to do what God expressly forbids.  It is to repeat the “godlessness” inherent in rape.  Unlike the rape in which the woman is an innocent victim, in abortion she becomes an accomplice in an act that destroys an innocent, defenseless child.

The fact that the mother was in no way responsible for the act that led to the child's conception does not remove the child's right to life.  The truly compassionate, loving solution is one that is both non-violent and life-giving.  Positive, sensitive, and caring counseling that encourages the nurture and protection of the other innocent victim of rape or incest –the unborn child—can be part of the healing process.

Incest—Incest involves a complex family situation that will not be cured or stopped by abortion.  Abortion promises silence and makes it possible for the incest to continue.  The more effective response to pregnancies resulting from incest is to deal with the environment in which the girl is being victimized.  Aborting the girl's baby and then returning her to the family situation that caused the problem in the first place is no solution.

Years after incest has stopped, victimized women report lingering pain and scars, but many cling to the promise in Psalm 147:3 that God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.  Victims of rape and incest often struggle for a long time with self-esteem, but many claim that what has helped them with the sense of degradation is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

“He loves me just the way I am,” said one victim.  “I don't have to be perfect or have to earn His love!” said another.  “I am absolutely complete in Christ,” wrote a third.

When Love Begins—If the value of human life is to have any meaning, then its value cannot depend on , or be diminished by, the circumstances that brought about that new human life.  God maps out the tapestry of life for each child, whether a child is the product of love and marriage or the product of rape and incest.  It is not a question of when life begins.  It is a question of when love begins and God's love for each child begins in His mind and heart before they were even conceived.

Yankton Hosts Dressing for Life Event

After a cloudy and wet week, the sky was sunny and bright for South Dakota's first Dressing for Life: Secrets of the Great Cover-up Vintage Style Show.  The March 29, 2008 event boasted a nearly full-house with approximately 175 guests and models.  The event was coordinated by a small group of Yankton area women concerned about the messages that some clothing styles may send to others.  Table hostesses invited guests and decorated their tables in creative and inviting ways to welcome their guests.  A large variety of desserts aroused taste buds while a special message brought by Linda Bartlett aroused their thoughts.  Linda is the founder of the Titus 2 For Life Ministry, former president of National Lutherans For Life and present Director of Outreach for Word of Hope, the healing ministry of Lutherans For Life.  Judy Hayen assisted the program behind the scenes in guiding the models.

The event was intended to help women learn what the Bible says about women and the clothing they wear, and mentor one another in the teaching.  Linda's experience over the years as she has spoken to young people is that “few of them understand that their behavior and dress has either a positive or negative, helpful or harmful impact on guys.”  The style show featured a collection of clothing from the late 1800s to the 2000s.  Commentary was offered on certain periods of history in terms of how clothing was used to “blend in” or rebel against the culture.  Swim suits, prom dresses and wedding dresses were highlighted.

This well-received event was met with comments from the guests like:  “I've been waiting for a program like this.”  “Thank you for bringing this to Yankton.”  “The message was Great!”   “I would like Dressing for Life to come to our area.”  “I was honored to be able to attend this event.”

This unique lifestyle show also served as an educational fund-raiser for the Alpha Center, a crisis pregnancy center, and Word of Hope Ministry.

Renewal For Life—Renewing Relevancy and Resources

Last month's feature of Renewal For Life (a comprehensive, exciting new program of Lutherans For Life (LFL) that will help Lutherans save and change lives right in their own families and community) encouraged pastors and congregations to see addressing the life issues as their responsibility .  This month we will feature how Renewal For Life  will be used to encourage and help pastors and congregations understand the relevancy and power of the Gospel in addressing life issues.  We want to renew among God's pastors and people the relevancy of the Gospel in addressing life issues.  We have what it takes to make a difference in people's lives!  The Gospel is the most positive and powerful For Life message in the universe!  Lutheran pastors and congregations already have what it takes to confront issues of life and death—the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  LFL desires to help them see how relevant this message is, to help them connect this message to these issues that God's people often face.  We want people to be led to turn to the Lord of Life, not the god of death, for help and hope.

Assuming the responsibility to deal with the complexity of the life issues and applying the Gospel to them cannot be done effectively and consistently without help.  LFL pledges to renew our efforts to provide the resources necessary for congregations to joyfully apply the positive For Life message of the Gospel.--Coming in September

Word of Hope

Word of Hope, the post-abortion healing ministry of Lutherans For Life, started 17years ago.  Since then, they have offered hope and healing to thousands averaging 300 calls per month on their hot-line.

Contacts range in age from teenagers on cell phone to the elderly in nursing homes, from prisoners writing from their cells to someone e-mailing us from a villa in Rome.  One thing they all have in common is this:  depression, sadness, fear, and guilt surrounding the abortion experience.   All are desperately seeking help.

The Psalmist writes:  He is the Healer of the brokenhearted.  He is the One who bandages their wounds.  (147:3  GOD'S WORD for Life).  Word of Hope share that message by provided a toll-free hot-line (888-217-8679); web site (www.word-of-hope.org); crisis intervention; counseling; spiritual care; support groups; resources for pastors, parents, and teachers; education programs; and Titus 2 for Life (a model for mentoring biblical manhood and womanhood).

To learn how you can reach out to the woman and families who mourn the loss of a child to abortion, or help fund this life-changing ministry go to their web site or write them at:  Word of Hope, 2717 York Road, Oak Brook, IL  60523. ( Excerpts from LifeDate Spring 2008 page 17)

Notes 'n Quotes:

God became man at Jesus' conception in Mary.  Since our beginnings were sinful, Jesus had to take our place from that very moment.  Part of the redemptive process was for Jesus to pass through all stages of our development.  What powerful implications for the value of human life from the very beginning!  Jesus' divinity and humanity at the moment of conception attest to our humanity from that moment.”  (James Lamb, Executive Director of LFL)

Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions. (Gilbert K Chesterton)

“It is important...to note that abortion has never put an end to women's social distress but that it simply adds a personal tragedy.  There is no reason or motive that can ever objectively confer the right to dispose of another's life. (Catholic bishops in southeastern African nation of Uganda)

Life News Sponsors Needed

Could you please help us with this?  Life News is a monthly bulletin insert with life issue news, Questions and Answers, and an encouraging devotion.  It is a great way to keep your church informed on life issues all year long!  We are looking for sponsors to help defray the costs of $5.00 per 100 copies per month in every South Dakota church, how many copies your church will need depends on the size of your congregation.  Perhaps several people could pool together or different people could sponsor different months of the year or perhaps the church would like to make it part of their monthly bulletin. To order for your copies call LFL at  888-364-LIFE or info@lutheransforlife.org.

LFL of SD Diaper Derby 2008

Over 17,000 diapers were collected during the Mother’s Day/Father’s Day Diaper Challenge in 2007!  Let's see if we can't out-do that number this year in the Annual Diaper Derby.   Show support for God's gift of life by helping to provide diapers to moms and dads in need.  Collect disposable diapers of all sizes between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.  Count the numbers of diapers (not packages) and deliver them to a crisis pregnancy center, women's shelter or any ministry that helps families and their babies.  Then notify Lutherans For Life of SD at 42948 300th St., Lesterville, SD  57040, Ph:  605-364-7318, e-mail:  auch@ifriendly.com with the number of diapers collected, not the number of packages.  Pictures are welcome! Remember to thank your mom and dad for the gift of life and let the competition begin!!!

Renewal For Life

Renewal For Life is a comprehensive, exciting new program of Lutherans For Life (LFL) that will help Lutherans save and change lives right in their own families and community.  LFL wants to encourage and help pastors and congregations to see addressing the life issues as their responsibility.  Dealing with the life issues is not the responsibility of Lutherans For Life.  It is the responsibility of the church and her pastors.  It is the responsibility of the church because the life issues are spiritual issues.  Through Renewal For Life, pastors and others will come to a better understanding of the need to address the life issues in the church.  --  Coming the fall of 2008

Pennies for Life

In celebration of the life God has given to each of us, Lutherans For Life of South Dakota (LFLSD )is asking for you help. We are asking for a donation of one penny for each year of your life. (Larger contributions happily accepted!) Your gift will be used by LFLSD for various educational projects.  We are asking congregations and schools to help by placing an appropriate container in a prominent location in your church or school and mark it as "Pennies for Life".  Then convert the pennies to a check to LFL of SD and mail it to our State Treasurer, Don Sperlich, PO Box 193, Armour, SD  57313  Thanks for your help.

Just a Reminder!!

Touch of Life Fetal Models have been provided to all the circuit counselors in the LCMS SD District.   These unique fetal models are "rubber babies" made from BIOLIKE, a more natural like material, and represent the unborn child at 10, 15, 20 and 30 weeks development.  One touch of these is all it takes to call to mind the reality of life in the womb.  These models are a great addition to any Sunday school or confirmation class, Bible study , etc.  Contact your circuit counselor to reserve them for your use.

March 2008 Lutheran Witness

An Act to Protect the Lives of Unborn Children...

God's WORD tells us in Proverbs 31:8 to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves...”  We as Christians and South Dakotans must make the most of every opportunity to do just that.  There is a petition drive going on right now in South Dakota for signatures on “An Act to Protect the Lives of Unborn Children, and the Interests and Health of Pregnant Mothers, by Prohibiting Abortions Except in Cases where the Mother's Life or Health is at Risk, and in Cases of Rape and Incest.”

As many may remember, two years ago an abortion ban failed primarily because the “exceptions” for rape, incest, and life and health of the mother were too inhibiting.  This act has been carefully written to include exceptions but within specific guidelines.

Section 1.  Includes the reasons why chapter 22-17 should be amended:  “(1) That all induced abortions, whether surgically or chemically induced, terminate the life of an entire, unique, living human being, a human being separate from his or her mother, as a matter of scientific and biological fact; (2) That the state of South Dakota possesses a duty to protect the life of all human beings within the state, and it is a legitimate exercise of the state's power to protect the life of all human beings within the state, including those human beings living in utero; (3) That submitting to an abortion subjects the pregnant woman to significant psychological and physical health risks, and that in the majority of cases there is neither the typical physician-patient relationship nor sufficient counseling between a pregnant woman contemplating submitting to an abortion and the physician who performs the abortion; (4) That a pregnant woman possesses certain intrinsic rights which enjoy affirmative protection under the Constitution of the United States, and under the Constitution and laws of the State of South Dakota, and that among these rights are the fundamental right of the pregnant woman to her relationship with her child, and her fundamental right to make decisions that advance the well-being and welfare of her child; (5) The state has a right and duty to protect the life of the unborn child, and to protect the life, health, and well-being of any pregnant woman within its jurisdiction, and it is therefore necessary to reasonably balance these interests to allow abortions only in certain circumstances which are set forth within this Act; (6)  That the state has an established history of working to protect the life of the unborn child, and the life, health, and well-being of pregnant women within its jurisdiction.”

Section 2.  Clarifies an illegal abortion stating, “Except as permitted by section 3, 4, 5, or 6 of this act, any person who knowingly performs any procedure upon a pregnant woman, or uses any instrument upon a pregnant woman, or administers any medicine or drug or substance or device to a pregnant woman, or prescribes or procures or sells any medicine or drug or substance or device for use by a pregnant woman, or employs any other means with the intent of causing the termination of the life of an unborn human being, is guilty of performing an illegal abortion, which is a class 4 felony.

Sections 3 and 4.  Life and Health of the Pregnant Woman Exceptions.

Sections 5 and 6.  Rape and Incest Exceptions.

Section 7.  Condition for Rape and Incest Exceptions:  “Any abortion performed pursuant to section 5 or 6 of this act must be performed before the completion of the 20th week following the date of the pregnant woman's last menstrual period, as determined by the physician, according to accepted standards of medical practice, and as confirmed by ultrasound...”

Section 8.  Reporting and Counseling Requirements:  Before performing an abortion, the physician must meet certain requirements -- “(1) Advise the woman that a report of the rape or incest must be made...  (2) Obtain the woman's consent to collect a buccal or other biological sample from the woman...  (3)  Provide the woman with the phone numbers and addresses of counseling services in counseling victims of rape and incest...  (4)  Document all the actions taken pursuant to this section and maintain copies of all the documents...”

Sections 9-21.  Written policies, clarifications, definitions and the like.

(Summary and quotes taken from an actual petition)

Christians and South Dakotans, please inform yourselves and find a petition to sign and/or circulate to help protect women and children from the use of abortion as birth control. “The Fifth Commandment: You shall not murder.  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.”  (Luther's Small Catechism)  This is what Christ did and does for us.

CHOOSE LIFE
South Dakota Lutherans For Life Annual Life Conference
September 28-29, 2007

The Life Conference held September 28-29, 2007 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Huron, and was hosted by the Heartland LFL Chapter. Guest speaker Greg Koukl from “Stand to Reason” spoke with knowledge, power, and clarity, addressing “Only One Question”. The question is, “What is it? What is the unborn? If the unborn is NOT a human being then no justification for abortion is necessary.  If the unborn IS a human being, than no justification for an abortion is adequate. If the unborn is a human being, then the popular defenses for abortion are not valid because they fail to justify taking an innocent human life. It's wrong to intentionally kill innocent human beings.  Abortion intentionally kills an innocent human being.  Therefore, abortion is wrong.”

This led into the workshops: “Precious Unborn Human Persons “ and ”The Bankruptcy of Moral Relativism”. These workshops taught participants to ask questions to gain information and get a commitment of another's beliefs.  These beliefs will help those who believe in protecting the unborn to understand and challenge the opposition in an effective way.

If the unborn is a human being, then the popular defenses for abortion, such as privacy, choice, and rape, are not valid. We must argue the pro-life view by defending the full personhood and full humanity of the unborn from the moment of conception.

Moral relativism versus moral objectivism, the myth of moral neutrality, how to argue against relativism, relativism's fatal flaws, tactics in refuting relativism, and morality, guilt, and forgiveness were the focus in the afternoon.

Conference planners extend a warm "thank you" to the Heartland LFL Chapter and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church for hosting the event, East Dakota Chapter for publicity, Aberdeen Area LFL for breakfast, Southeast South Dakota LFL for the banner and decorations, and Trinity at White Lake Chapter for doing registrations.

Thank you to Pastor Bob Moeller for leading the Bible study, Pastor David Otten for emceeing and leading devotions, and Pastor Jonathan Boehne for leading the prayer vigil. Thank you to Rev. and Mrs. Dale Sattgast and the Alpha Center for helping with lodging, hosting and transporting.  Thank you to everyone who helped with donations of time, food, energy, or finances. It was a great learning opportunity.
